Millions of labels are applied to products every day. For best results:
1. Make sure you clean the surface where your labels will be placed very thoroughly with an industrial cleaning solution, or isopropyl alcohol. This will remove any unwanted impurities, and allow a strong adhesion from the labels to their surface.
Remember to clean the surface even if the equipment is brand new, as new equipment can still have impurities on the surface.
2. After you've cleaned your application surface, it's time to apply your label. Be sure to handle your labels by the edges once you have removed the protective liner, and avoid touching the exposed adhesive.
3. Apply your label firmly. Be sure to use a finger or a roller to get all of the excess air out from under your label.
4. When storing your labels, it is best to store them in a cool, dry location, as the labels will retain their adhesive properties longer if stored under the correct conditions. Be sure to keep labels out of high humidity and direct sunlight, as those will weaken adhesion strength over time. By following these quick, easy steps, you can be sure that your labels will properly adhere to their respective surfaces.
What Are The Most Common Causes Of Label Failure:
1) Misunderstanding of the Operating Environment
2) Not selecting the proper substrate, ink, and adhesive
How Can I Make Sure My Label Lasts The Lifetime Of The Product?
1) Proper Label Design (substrate-ink-adhesive)
2) Proper Contact With Application Surface/Proper Application Techniques
3) Apply The Label At Room Temperature
How Should I Store My Labels?
1) No Adhesive: Virtually Limitless
Adhesive (Generally): 70 Degrees+50 Percent Relative Humidity= 24 Month Shelf Life

Making a label out of anodized material is a durable and versatile solution for any application where you may need to record information directly on the nameplate. By using a paint pen, information can be transferred and kept up to date directly on the nameplate surface.

To ensure maximum performance of pressure sensitive labels from storage through application, we recommend the following procedures:
1. Labels should be stored at 72°F and 50% relative humidity. Storing labels at higher or lower temperatures may not provide the level of adhering performance you desire.
2. DO NOT attempt to apply labels in cold outdoor conditions as they will not adhere.
3. When you're ready to apply the label, the labels should be allowed to condition at room temperature before application is attempted. The surface must be at least 50°F. Below this temperature the adhesive becomes too firm to adhere readily.
4. Remove the liner from the stock being careful not to touch the adhesive with your fingers. Do not allow the adhesive to become contaminated with dust or dirt.
5. Adhesives will meet maximum holding power after 72 hours.

Although certain application strategies may save time in the short run, they also compromise the effective life of the label. Make sure the label is applied directly to the final surface once removed from the backing. Keeping the adhesive clean along with proper surface preparation, maximizes the bond between the adhesive and the substrate.
Labels adhere to fabric very easily . . . the challenge is in reusing them! Once they're applied and removed, the edges of the label tend to curl and dirt and fibers remain on the adhesive. Remember that adhesive contamination during the application process can lead to label failure.
Always clean the surface where your labels will be placed very thoroughly with an industrial cleaning solution, or isopropyl alcohol. This will remove any unwanted impurities, and allow a strong adhesion from the labels to their surface.

Whether you're applying labels to a powder coated, irregular or textured surface, it's important you use the right adhesive. Surface contact is critical for successful adhesive performance. To maximize adhesive contact on a powder coated surface:
1. It must be dry and free of contaminates
2. Firm pressure must be applied to increase the flow and contact of the adhesive with the substrate.
3. Proper curing time/temperatures will increase the surface contact and adhesion values.
4. 3M offers great adhesives that provide high bond strength to powder coated paints. For this demonstration, we used 3M's 9672LE.

This video will walk you through the process of removing a protective pre-mask from your nameplate, label, or decal. All you need for this process is masking tape. To learn more about pre-masks, overlaminates, and adhesives please visit the link listed above.
Mcloone applies a premask to the window of your overlay or panel in order to protect it from scratches, lint, and other debris during shipping. Removal of this premask prior to application is easy and can be done a number of ways. Here's one way to remove a premask: Start by taking a piece of masking or scotch tape. Press your finger against the premask and gently pull away from the window. You now have a scratch/dirt free window ready for application.
Mcloone received a worksite wellness Gold Award from the La Crosse Area Family YMCA's Pioneering Healthier Communities Team.
